This policy describes what LibertyLink collects, why, and the choices you have. It does not promise protections we do not actually implement.
1. Who We Are
LibertyLink is an independent, student-run study and collaboration platform restricted to verified Liberty University School of Law students and alumni. It is not affiliated with Liberty University.
2. Information We Collect
- Account information: your
@liberty.edu email address, a display name you set, class year (1L/2L/3L/Alum), bio, and role/approval status. - Authentication data: an email-and-password credential managed by our platform's authentication provider; password reset/verification codes handled by the platform.
- Uploaded and authored documents: outlines and notes you upload as files or author in the built-in outline editor, along with the course/professor metadata you provide. Content imported from .docx files is converted and stored as part of your outline. Drafts are private until you publish them.
- Collaboration content: anchored comments you make on outline passages, private forks you create from others' outlines, and suggestions you submit or receive proposing edits to an original outline.
- Messages and posts: chat messages and comments you post, including an approximate originating IP address recorded for chat messages for safety and abuse investigation.
- Reviews and advice: professor/course reviews and advice you author, shown under your display name (or "Anonymous" where the feature supports it).
- Marketplace content: textbook listings you create, including price, condition, cover photo, and seller name.
- Notification preferences: your email-notification opt-in choices (e.g., chat, outlines, textbooks, reviews).
- Usage and logs: platform-level request logs and basic analytics needed to operate, secure, and improve the service.
- Device/identifier information: no persistent advertising identifiers are collected; standard server logs and browser request data may be retained briefly.
3. How We Use Information
- To create, verify, and administer your account and approve access.
- To host and display your uploaded outlines, posts, reviews, and marketplace listings to other verified students.
- To operate chat and direct messaging between students, including email notifications you opt into.
- To investigate reports of abuse, fraud, harassment, and copyright infringement.
- To maintain the security and integrity of the service and comply with legal obligations.
4. Who Receives Your Information
Your profile name, class year, bio, and email address are visible to other verified students through the People directory and public profiles so classmates can identify and message each other. Your uploaded study documents and marketplace listings are visible to other verified students. Your private account credentials and email are not shared with other students beyond what is shown on your profile.
We use third-party service providers that process data on our behalf:
- Cloud platform & database hosting: stores account records, content, and files.
- Email delivery: sends verification, password reset, and notification emails.
- AI providers: if you use an AI-assisted feature, the prompt and any attached content you submit may be sent to a third-party AI provider to generate a response. Do not submit confidential or sensitive personal information to AI features.
We do not sell your personal information.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account and content while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from Settings, which removes your profile and user-generated content (outlines, listings, messages, reviews, and comments). Some records may persist in platform-level backups or logs for a limited period after deletion.
6. Your Choices and Rights
- Access & correction: view and update your display name, bio, class year, and notification preferences in Settings.
- Deletion: delete your account and associated content from Settings, or contact an admin.
- Notifications: turn email notifications on or off at any time. Security and account messages may still be sent when required.
- Marketing: we do not send marketing email; invite and notification emails are functional only and can be disabled via preferences (except where essential for account security).
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under state privacy laws (such as CCPA/CPRA in California) or other jurisdictions. We will respond to verifiable requests to access or delete your data.
7. Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, including restricting access to verified students, server-side authorization checks on sensitive actions, and limiting administrative privileges. No service can be guaranteed fully secure. Avoid sharing sensitive personal information in outlines, chats, or listings.
8. Children's Privacy
LibertyLink is intended for adult law students and alumni and is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe a minor has registered, contact an admin so we can remove the account.
9. AI Privacy
When you use AI features, the information you submit is sent to a third-party AI provider to generate a response. We minimize what is sent and do not knowingly share one student's private materials with another student's AI session. We do not control whether third-party AI providers retain submitted prompts; review their policies if this matters to you.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy and will post the new version with an updated effective date. Material changes may require renewed acceptance where appropriate.
